WooCommerce or Shopify: which to choose for an online store?
Short answer
Choose Shopify if you want to start quickly, have a simple catalogue and don't want to deal with servers and updates. Choose WooCommerce if you need non-standard sales logic (B2B prices, bundles, courses), integrations with local systems and full control without monthly platform fees.
Shopify if…
- you want to launch within weeks
- your catalogue is simple
- you don't want to deal with servers and updates
- a monthly fee and app costs suit you
WooCommerce if…
- you need B2B prices, bundles, courses or your own logic
- local payment and courier integrations matter
- you want to control the code and data
- the store is part of a bigger website
The key difference
Shopify is a rented platform: you pay a monthly fee, and Shopify maintains the servers, security and updates. Extra features come through apps, often also billed monthly.
WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin on your own server. No platform fee on turnover and full control, but it needs hosting and maintenance.
Where Shopify is stronger
- A fast start and fewer technical worries.
- Stable checkout and reliable infrastructure.
- Convenient if you’re on your own and have no technical partner.
Where WooCommerce is stronger
- Non-standard logic: prices by customer group, minimum quantities, bundles, products with courses.
- Local market integrations: regional payment providers and couriers.
- Content and SEO: the store, blog and service pages on one website.
- Data and code belong to you – you can change supplier or server.
